Bilbo Baggins could have been from Donostia

Three films that celebrate "the most important meal of the day'' and a city to enjoy it.

As cinema and Donostia are irremediably connected, what better than to remember some iconic scenes and take the opportunity to tell you things about the city that have to do with them?

The smell of coffee, freshly squeezed juice, toast... Breakfast is, for many, the best meal of the day. In Basque we even have two words of our own to talk about a second breakfast: hamaiketako, which translates as "the thing at eleven o'clock", and hamarretako, when you feel peckish closer to 10 than 11 in the morning. The hobbits have nothing on us. Let us take you on a journey through three films with famous breakfasts and their connection with our city.

"I’m just crazy about Tiffany's!"

Remember Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's? In the first scene she walks up to the window of this famous jewellery store on Fifth Avenue and takes a pastry and a coffee out of a paper bag, while looking at the pieces on display. It is a strange and beautiful scene, which has gone down in the annals of film history. But what happened behind the scenes was an entirely different thing. Hundreds of spectators crowded behind the perimeter of the set. This made Audrey nervous and the scene had to be repeated many times, because she kept making mistakes. Hepburn only managed to get off her particular wheel of hell when a member of the technical crew was nearly electrocuted. We assume that the shock and surprise forced her to reset and end the scene. If you feel like emulating Ms. Hepburn in our city, you can visit Casa Munoa jewellery shop. In front of its windows, full of precious items, and with your sunglasses on, you can dream for a while about being  Holly Golightly...

"I got you, babe”

Maybe you wake up starving like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day and you need to devour a mountain of pastries and pancakes with bacon and syrup because, as we all know, you don't get fat on holiday. However, on the set of the film there was someone who was even hungrier than Phil Connors, and that was none other than the groundhog himself. The animal even bit Bill Murray twice and the actor had to be vaccinated against rabies. If you're also one of those who can't resist the urge to sink your teeth into something ―like the groundhog― in the middle of the morning, then a second breakfast or hamaiketako is for you. Go into any of the bars, taverns or casas de comidas in our city and order a  tortilla pintxo or any other kind of pintxo. A delight for the most demanding palates.

"I love you, Honey Bunny"

A couple have a leisurely breakfast in a diner. They remember a robbery they did in a liquor store and, after sealing their plan with a kiss, they get up and threaten the whole restaurant to rob them. This heist is the beginning of a masterpiece directed by Quentin Tarantino: Pulp Fiction. But that wasn’t the only "mugging" going on in this movie: Harvey Keitel suffered one himself and the culprit was none other than Quentin. On the one hand, he asked Keitel to play Mr. Wolf, which encouraged the production company to cough up the money to make the film. But this money was not enough, so Keitel ended up writing a cheque to the director, a money that made the filming possible. Talk about Mr. Wolf’s mastery at solving problems... We don't know if Harvey Keitel is usually awake at breakfast time, but we do know that he has been to Donosti on several occasions and that he likes our food. When he visits us, he leaves proof of his visits to different restaurants. Look at the walls of the Bergara or the Oquendo: you will see him with a smile from ear to ear in the photographs that decorate these establishments.
