TV Series become art

When the small screen offers us great works

The TV series of yesteryear have nothing to do with the authentic auteur gems that streaming platforms offer us today: the best qualities of the seventh art in an extended version

We are in the middle of the Zinemaldia. Therefore, we would like to recommend you some shows that we think are exceptional and that, in our opinion, could compete for the Concha de Plata at our cinema festival. No matter when you read this: you have to see them!

Mare of Eastown, HBO

The different realities of a country as immense as the United States are a continuous source of inspiration for the scriptwriters who tell its complexity. A few months ago, Mare of Easttown (a seven-part series starring the immeasurable Kate Winslet) gave rise to all kinds of debates. The mastery of the script - written by Brad Ingelsby - or the intrigue generated by the story of a murdered teenager that Mare-Kate must investigate were some of them. On the other hand, much, too much, was said about whether Winslet had put on weight or looked "old". A sexist bias that Winslet's extraordinary performance completely vaporised.

Succession, HBO

This series has been an absolute success with critics and audiences. The main character's family - a transcript of that of media mogul Rupert Murdoch - is caught up in power struggles and business intrigue. A drama about these individuals belonging to the 1% of the world's population, those extremely privileged super-rich, which allows us to enjoy the performance of the Scottish actor Brian Cox. His role as a patriarch who doesn't let go and plays with his children's ambitions at will (and with a Machiavellian touch) is unforgettable. There is no way not to fall for this true masterpiece of television.

The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, Amazon Prime

Its three seasons will leave you with a smile on your face and an everlasting crush on its main character, Rachel Brosnahan. Miriam, the highly intelligent wife of a mediocre businessman and aspiring comedian, sees her whole life go down the drain one night when her husband leaves her. It's the 1950s and Miriam belongs to a Jewish family who put too much emphasis on her being the perfect wife, so a major disaster is looming. That night she gets drunk and comes up with the brilliant idea of going to the comedy club where her husband sometimes performs. Her improvised monologue about what has just happened to her is so funny that it opens up a new avenue for her: to become a professional comedian herself. The supersonic speed of the dialogue (a trademark of creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, author of Gilmore Girls), the eccentric and charming characters that surround the protagonist and, above all, the incredible Miriam will completely captivate you.

La Fortuna, Movistar

Finally, a series directed by Alejandro Amenábar, an internationally renowned Spanish director. Starring Álvaro Mel, Ana Polvorosa, Clarke Peters and Stanley Tucci, the series tells the adventures of Álex, an inexperienced diplomat who must recover a stolen underwater treasure. Adventure, friendship, love... everything fits in this series, which is a surprising twist on the style of the multi-award-winning Amenábar.

There are many more that have entertained, questioned, moved and surprised us, but as they would say in The Mandalorian: This is the way. As we look forward to seeing this Star Wars fantasy in the cinema, on a mega-big screen if possible, you can always start in the comfort of your Zinema7 room!
