Things to see in San Sebastian
Beyond the beach and pintxos, the city offers you an immersion in Basque art and contemporary culture with the San Telmo Museum.
Chillida y las artes. 1950-1970.
Imagine you’re in a movie from the 50s. The protagonist is Eduardo Chillida, a sculptor who is defining his aesthetic ideals and his plastic imaginary. This exhibition, which takes place from June 8 to September 29, 2024, allows you to enter Chillida’s creative universe. It’s as if you were in a black and white movie, walking through the streets of Paris, while Chillida discusses art with Picasso and Miró.
The exhibition “Chillida and the arts. 1950-1970” commemorates the centenary of the artist’s birth and will allow you to discover his first decades of creation, a crucial period in which he defined his aesthetic ideals and his characteristic plastic language.
Through a careful selection of sculptures, drawings, engravings, and photographs, the exhibition will accompany you on a tour of the different creative stages of Chillida, from his figurative beginnings to his geometric abstraction. You will be able to admire emblematic works such as “Construction in forged iron” (1957), “Comb of the wind” (1958) or “Praise of the void” (1961), and understand the deep connection of the artist with matter and his constant search for dialogue with space.
“Chillida and the arts. 1950-1970” is not just an exhibition, it is a sensory experience that will allow you to connect with Chillida’s work through different stimuli. The museography of the exhibition, designed by the Donostia studio Etxegorria, invites you to tour the museum spaces in a fluid and dynamic way, creating a dialogue between the exhibited works and the architecture of the building.
In addition to the main exhibition, the San Telmo Museum has organized a complete program of parallel activities that include conferences, workshops, guided tours, and film screenings. A unique opportunity to delve into the life and work of Chillida and the cultural context of his time.
Fondo Galarza STM, San Sebastián
From October 26, 2024, to January 23, 2025, the San Telmo Museum invites you to take a journey back in time through the exhibition “Photography from the Galarza STM fund”. This exhibition brings together a selection of more than 3000 images from the photographic fund of Gregorio González Galarza and his son Carmelo González Campano, two photographers who documented the evolution of San Sebastián during the first half of the 20th century.
The exhibition will allow you to walk the streets of the city, contemplate its architecture, its people, and its customs of the time. An invaluable graphic testimony that will help you understand the urban and social transformation that San Sebastián experienced in those years.
Remember, life is like a movie, and you are the protagonist. If you wonder what to see in San Sebastián, the San Telmo Museum is a must-see. And after a day of culture and history, what better than to rest in your favorite hotel in San Sebastián? ;)
