Cate Blanchett, new Donostia Award at Zinemaldia
This year, the San Sebastian Film Festival is dressing up to receive one of the most acclaimed actresses of our time: Cate Blanchett. The Australian actress will be awarded the Donostia Award at the 72nd edition of the festival, marking her first visit to the city.
Cate Blanchett, Donostia Award - 72 San Sebastian International Film Festival
Since its creation in 1953, the San Sebastián Film Festival, known as Zinemaldia among the locals, has become an essential event for film lovers. Throughout its editions, it has hosted great figures of cinema and has witnessed unforgettable moments.
Beyond the screenings and galas, the San Sebastián Film Festival is an experience that is lived throughout the city. The streets come alive, bars and restaurants become meeting points for film lovers and artists, and the atmosphere exudes a passion for cinema. The locals throw themselves into the festival, attending screenings, participating in colloquiums, and enjoying the numerous parallel activities that are organized.
Blanchett, with more than 200 recognitions and awards in a prolific career that has led her to work under great filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Terrence Malick, Steven Soderbergh, David Fincher, Ridley Scott and Woody Allen, among others, is no stranger to major festivals. She has walked the red carpet at Cannes, Venice and Berlin, and now arrives in San Sebastián for the first time. Her presence at Zinemaldia will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of the edition, and the locals are eagerly awaiting to see her receive the Donostia Award and enjoy her talent in some of the special screenings that will be organized in her honor.
The Donostia Award that Blanchett will receive this year adds to a long list of recognitions that includes two Oscar awards, four BAFTAs, four Golden Globes and three SAG awards. After sweeping the 2023 awards season for her role as the despotic orchestra director Lydia Tàr, Blanchett presented at last year’s San Sebastián Festival the film The New Boy, which she also produced and was nominated for Best Film in the Un Certain Regard section of Cannes.
Blanchett is a chameleon-like actress, capable of getting into the skin of completely different characters with astonishing naturalness. Her talent has made her one of the most respected and beloved performers on the international scene.
Award The award that Blanchett will receive this year has a special meaning, as it will be the second time an Australian performer receives the Donostia Award. In 2013, actor Hugh Jackman was in charge of collecting this prestigious award.
