Film lovers, die-hard cinephiles, and intrepid explorers, are you ready for an unscripted adventure along the Basque coast? Forget the red carpets and Hollywood spotlights, because in Euskadi a natural movie set awaits you: its lighthouses.
Keep reading to find out what to see in San Sebastián.
Higer Lighthouse in Hondarribia
Witnesses to shipwrecks and storms on a coast as rugged as the Basque one, there are numerous lighthouses that have guided sailors for centuries, defying the waves and whispering secrets to the wind. In addition, they represent an archaeological heritage worthy of admiring and preserving in our territory. Today, we invite you to discover them from a different perspective, with the curious gaze and adventurous heart of a true explorer.
The goal? To travel a magical route that connects some of the most emblematic lighthouses in the region, those silent guardians that safeguard the wild beauty of the Basque coast. A journey in which history, nature, and the essence of cinema intertwine to create a unique and unforgettable experience.
Your hotel in Donostia? The Zinema7 Hotel, of course. A hotel dedicated to cinema in the Amara neighborhood, in San Sebastián, where every detail breathes passion for the seventh art and where comfort merges with the most cinematic elegance.
Shall we start? ;)
To the east, where the Bidasoa meets the sea, stands the imposing Higer lighthouse, a neoclassical lighthouse built in 1881. Located in the municipality of Hondarribia, between the mouth of the river and Mount Jaizkibel, this lighthouse has witnessed shipwrecks, storms, and stories of sailors.
Imagine Marlon Brando, with his trench coat and penetrating gaze, walking this rocky promontory. Or Audrey Hepburn, strolling along the path leading to the lighthouse, the wind caressing her hair and the sun illuminating her face.
Getting to Higer is easy: you can access it on foot or by car. And once there, an unprecedented visual spectacle awaits you: the waves breaking against the rocks, the seagulls flying freely, and the infinite horizon of the sea.
In addition, next to the lighthouse, you will find a camping site and a couple of bars and restaurants, where you can enjoy the local cuisine while contemplating the impressive views. A perfect stop along the way to savor a pintxo of txistorra or a delicious Basque cake, with a glass of txakoli in hand and the sea breeze caressing your skin.
San Anton Lighthouse in Getaria
We head north, towards the bay of Donostia. There, on the small Santa Clara Island, is a lighthouse that remained empty and abandoned for many years.
However, in 2009, the artist Cristina Iglesias decided to give this lighthouse a new life, transforming it into a unique work of art. Inspired by the wild nature of the island, Iglesias created an installation that restores the interior of the Lighthouse House and turns it into a breathtaking sculptural environment.
Entering this lighthouse is like entering a science fiction movie. Iglesias’ sculptures, made of natural materials such as stone, metal, and wood, transport us to a dreamlike world where time and space merge.
Without a doubt, a sensory experience that will not leave you indifferent. As Federico Fellini said: “Cinema is like a dream, but with the possibility of choosing it”.
The easiest access to the island is through the Island Motorboat: https://motorasdelaisla.com/tarifas/
We continue our journey west, to the town of Getaria. There, on top of Mount San Antón, is the Ratón lighthouse, built in 1862 on the remains of an ancient hermitage.
This 21-meter high lighthouse offers stunning panoramic views of the Basque coast. At its feet extends Mount San Antón, a recreation and leisure area for the inhabitants of Getaria.
Imagine Clint Eastwood, perched on the lighthouse tower, scanning the horizon with his penetrating gaze. Or Humphrey Bogart, lighting a cigarette and looking for his next adventure.
The Ratón lighthouse is a magical place, where time seems to stop and imagination can fly free. A perfect place to reflect, disconnect, and connect with nature.
As Alfred Hitchcock said: “Cinema is an art that allows us to escape from reality and live other lives”.
Access to the Ratón lighthouse is prohibited to vehicles. However, you can walk from the center of Getaria in about 30 minutes. A pleasant walk through a beautiful natural environment.
After a day of adventures through the lighthouses of Euskadi, what better than to relax at the Zinema7 Hotel?
